Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Just about everyone I know has been impacted in some way by breast cancer, whether by personal experience or as part of a support network for a family member or friend. The American Cancer Society publishes yearly facts and figures and so we learn that in 2008, an estimated 182,460 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed among women in the United States. The frightening reality is that the chance of developing invasive breast cancer at some time in a woman's life is about 1 in 8 (12%). AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals founded the National Breast Cancer Awareness Month in the year 1985. It is an annual international health campaign organized by major breast cancer charities every October to increase awareness of the disease and to raise funds for research into its cause, prevention and cure. The number of companies promoting breast cancer awareness has increased has over the years. For example, Torrid.com has a variety of breast cancer awareness items and with a donation to the National Breast Cancer Foundation you will receive 10% off your purchase of $50.00 or more (use promo code BCHOPE08). At AlwaysForMe.com, a portion of the proceeds from the sale of each pink Enell bra will be donated to FORCE (Facing Our Risk of Cancer Empowered). LimogesJewelry.com has a special collection of Breast Cancer Awareness Jewelry and 5% of all proceeds will be donated to BreastCancer.org. Finally, Shop Pink at Shoes.com and 10% of all proceeds go to Komen for the Cure. Oh, and please don't forget to check out the ACS recommendations for early detection of breast cancer. Be well!

Around the world breast cancer statistics shows that after lung cancer breast cancer is the second most death-causing factor in people who develops cancer. The risk factor of developing breast cancer increases with the age, it does not only relate to women, figures show that out of every 100 women there is one male who is diagnosed of breast cancer.
